Or, how to be found when you are, currently, a small fish in a big pond.

People are becoming more and more discerning when performing searches with the search engines, Google, Yahoo, MSN etc. Most people will enter a descriptive term in a hope of producing better and more relevant answers to the item they are searching for.

Let us consider the following scenario; you have decided to go on holiday. You know that you want to stay in a hotel, so you go to Google and you start searching.

You enter “Hotel” and are presented with 1 – 10 of about 967 Million!

A bit wild so you decide to be a bit more specific so you enter “5 star hotel”. Excellent you’ve reduced the number available by a factor of 100 there are 9.5 million. You are tempted by the 7 Star offering at the top, but Dubai is not your destination of choice. Since the days of Jack Lord in Hawaii 5 0 you’ve had your heart set on that Hawaiian holiday so we are going to focus our search further “5 Star Hotel Hawaii” fantastic we are down to 2.25 million. Now you may choose to focus in any number of directions, location Maui or activity golf so let us take the next step. Getting closer only ¼ million to go through. But, wait how will your partner entertain them self whilst you play golf, so now you need 5 Star – Hawaii – Golf and Health Spa. Great we are now down to 66 thousand. Still some odd results, one or two in Britain! Now your children are off your hands and you do not really want to be bothered by other peoples so add a few negatives “-family” and “-children”. Now we are getting closer on 4,500. Now you think you may want to go sports fishing for Marlin so we tag fishing on the end. 2,500 results and the top results look good.

Now consider applying this principal to your products / services. By producing pages that a long tail keyword friendly you too can rise to the top of the search engine pages.

However, word of warning! Do not be fooled by the claims of some companies who say they can guarantee to get you to the top of Google. They will use long tail keywords that sound plausible, but in reality it’s only them and you that are searching for them.

You should work with SEO experts who will present you with keyword lists that will generate real results for you.

Maybe you sell diamond rings, there are over 200,000 results, but would you like a share of the people who want rare blue diamond rings. Would it be worth a little effort to be near the top of the 24 results?
